Regional Disparities and Spatial Dependence of Bankruptcy in Spain

Firm survival, bankruptcy, and turnaround are of great interest nowadays. Bankruptcy is the ultimate resource for a company to survive when it affected by severe decline. Thus, determinants firm survival in context bankruptcy researchers, managers, policy-makers. Prior literature has broadly studied firm-specific factors success. However, location-specific remain relatively unstudied despite their increasing relevance. this paper aims evaluate existence spatial dependence on outcome procedure. Economic geography business suggest that location matters closer companies behave similarly further ones. For purpose, we designed longitudinal analysis employing correlation techniques. The analyses were conducted sample 862 Spanish bankrupt firms (2004–2017) at regional level (province). overcoming limitations usually logistic model employed context, Moran’s Index Local Association (LISA) applied with gvSIG GeoDa software. empirical results show predictors GDP per capita manufacturing specialization related higher rates. Both characteristics tend be present identified cluster provinces better outcomes located North Spain. We impacts likelihood firm, which can condition strategic decision locating one region or another. Our findings provide policy-makers, researchers relevant contributions future investigation lines.
